Radar-Enforced Tunnel Safety: Full-Tracking & Auto-Warning for Hazardous Vehicles – Shanxi, China

Highway tunnels are among the most challenging environments for traffic safety—confined, poorly accessible, and with limited evacuation routes. When hazardous chemical (hazmat) vehicles pass through, the risk of secondary and catastrophic incidents multiplies.

In Shanxi Province, China, a pioneering solution has been deployed across key tunnels, including the Datong–Paipan Tunnel, to tackle this exact challenge.

The Core Technology:
A tri-sensor fusion architecture—"HD camera + intelligent video + millimeter-wave radar"—working in real-time. The radar component plays a pivotal role:

  • Continuous trajectory tracking under all lighting and weather conditions
  • Vehicle position, speed, and density monitoring with high precision
  • Millisecond-level event detection (sudden stops, lane changes, tailgating, etc.)
  • Seamless handover between sensor modalities to maintain track continuity even in poor visibility or tunnel interference

The System in Action:

  1. Radar and video data are fused through deep-learning models to uniquely identify and follow hazmat vehicles from tunnel entry to exit.
  2. Any abnormal behavior triggers an instant alert.
  3. The alert is simultaneously pushed to variable message signs (VMS) and yellow induction beacons inside the tunnel, warning surrounding drivers in real time—reducing reaction time and secondary crash risks.

Measured Outcomes (Live Deployments):

  • Full lifecycle tracking of each hazmat vehicle through the tunnel
  • Automatic identification of abnormal events without manual intervention
  • Significant reduction in hazmat-related incident rates at sites like Taiyuan–Jiaozuo Highway's Linxian No.3 TunnelPaiyan Tunnel, and Datong Beiliangmatou Tunnel

This system is part of a broader "green and intelligent safety" initiative led by the Shanxi Transportation Safety Emergency Support Technology Center, combining infrastructure and information technology to reimagine highway risk management.
